Websites published by members of the UK Association of Online Publishers (AOP), including the BBC, Emap, FT.com, Guardian Unlimited, Haymarket, IPC Media, News International and Reed Business Information, are estimated to attract 48.9m page impressions, 17.6m unique users and 8.9m registered users per day, according to the association's first membership survey.
The survey also reveals that sources of revenue for online publishers vary enormously, with the most important being display advertising, forming 35% of all revenue. Other popular sources of revenue are: content syndication (13%), subscriptions (14%), sponsorship (12%), recruitment advertising (10%), ecommerce, web design and development, classified advertising, driving print subscriptions, events promotion, and commission on sales.
In addition, 16% of the media websites received more than half their revenue from overseas.
Alex Daley, head of AOP, said: " These figures show that websites providing original content from established brands in the UK are attracting impressive audiences. It will be interesting to view them as benchmarks for the future."
