Czech publishers have been threatened with severely restricted freedom of speech CZECH PUBLISHERS HAVE BEEN THREATENED WITH SEVERELY RESTRICTED FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Czech publishers have been threatened with severely restricted freedom of speech in a Government draft Bill published last week. The draft Bill includes mandatory registration of titles before publication has commenced - registration details have to include type and target audience of the title rather than just company details as in other EU countries. The draft Bill also prohibits criticism of the Czech constitution, a move which could be used to prevent any criticism of the Government. All the measures are backed by sanctions including fines and imprisonment for publishers. FAEP and FIPP are supporting the Czech publishers in opposing this legislation. At its latest meeting at the FIPP Congress, the FIPP/FAEP Joint Environment Committee held a series of useful discussions on both the proposed CEPI voluntary agreement and on forest certification. Axel Springer Verlag AG also presented a summary of the first complete life cycle analysis for a weekly magazine and for a daily newspaper. This exercise had been undertaken in conjunction with STORA and CANFOR. ASV is now working with the Worldwide Fund for Nature in order to develop the methodology. The Study has been forwarded to DG XI.
