American Campus magazine targets international students

Launched earlier this year, American Campus is the brainchild of two former New York Times executives and takes the form of a print publication and accompanying website.

The print edition of American Campus acts as a supplement to existing newspaper and magazine titles, and is currently available in China and India as a result of licensing agreements with 21st Century and Careers360 magazine, respectively. A licensing model allows for a variety of formats and frequencies as well as a revenue share of advertising sold in the US.

Gloria Brown Anderson, formerly vice president for international development of The Times’ News Services Division, is the publisher of American Campus, while Barbara Gaynes, formerly managing editor of The New York Times Syndicate, serves as editor-in-chief.

“American higher education is a dream for millions of young people around the world,” Anderson said.  “American Campus covers not only the ‘brand-name’ schools but also hundreds of other institutions that offer excellent programs with outstanding faculty where international students are welcome and well-served.”

Anderson told FIPP that new international editions of American Campus are planned for Mexico and Vietnam later this year, as well as having its sights set on other markets.

“We’re especially interested in partnering with publishers in countries that send large numbers of students to American colleges,” Anderson said. “That’s where the editorial content will be most relevant to the greatest number of readers.”

Other top countries of origin of foreign students in the US are South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico and Turkey, according to the Open Doors Report from the Institute of International Education.
