Print as a Statement: Stories of Craft, Curation, and Impact and Revival of Print Prestige

Today’s print wins by being a keepsake, not a commodity: ruthless curation, elevated design, and deliberate precise placement. When you publish less – but better – at cultural peaks, readers treat issues not only as great content, but as a collectable reference. Pair that with smart, selective distribution and thoughtful partner tie-ins. And always ask, what reader problem am I solving in this noisy space: cultural intelligence, sustainable choices, agency? The result: economics that reward quality over volume, stronger pricing power, and a loyal, curious community. We’ll walk through this using some real world examples.

Kati Murto represents UPM, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of graphic paper, as Vice President, Marketing, Sustainability, and Communications. Kati is board member at FIPP and has a genuine passion for reading. She loves magazines of all kinds and is a keen promoter of printed communication with strong background in advertising and marketing. For the past three years, Kati has worked to promote the value of paper as a sustainable medium for trust, impact, learning, and inspiration. In her current position, she promotes sustainability as one key element in ensuring the future of print in an ever-evolving digital world.

Christopher Berardelli is President of Media Horizons. Chris has spent much of his career in the paper, print and digital media businesses at Media Horizons, Lindenmeyr Central, LSC Communications, and RR Donnelley. He is a sales executive at heart with a proven record of new business development and portfolio growth. Combining sales with his financial background, he has created measurable results for clients of all sizes.

Chris earned his BS from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Michael Smith is the co-founder and technical lead at Darwin CX. He has a proven track record in architecting and implementing, and customer-centric solutions within successful, ROI-driven, business models. He is experienced in cloud-first application architecture, team leadership, and digital marketing, and is dedicated to optimizing the customer experience. Michael has founded and sold two successful start-ups and worked with an array of clients, including Hockey Canada, the Coaching Association of Canada, Zoomer Media Limited, and the Canadian Tire Corp.

AI as the Operating Model

Michael’s session dives into the real story behind AI: not as a feature, but as a new operating model for modern publishers. He’ll break down how agentic AI will eliminate manual work, simplify decision-making, and accelerate experimentation — and how Darwin’s roadmap is intentionally moving in this direction. If you want a clear, practical view of how AI will impact your teams and your stack, don’t miss it.
