BBC tops list of popular news apps

BBC News was the most downloaded news app in the UK in 2022, a new survey by the Press Gazette has found.

The app was newly installed 908,000 times from January to November 2022 according to data provided by app intelligence company Sensor Tower. The Sky News app came in second with 607,000 installations, followed by Opera News with 332,000 installations.

When it comes to legacy publishers in the UK, the Guardian’s breaking news app ranked eighth with 172,000 downloads, followed by the LBC app at nine (170,000 downloads) and The Times and The Sunday Times app at 10 (164,000 downloads). 

In America, NewsBreak, a local news aggregator, was the most downloaded app with 7.1 million installations, followed by Japanese app Smart News (2.3 million downloads and another aggregator, Local News (1.8 million downloads).
