Charlotte Smith announced as new BBC Music Magazine Editor

Immediate Media Co, the special interest content and platform company, today announces that Charlotte Smith has been appointed as Editor for BBC Music Magazine.

BBC Music Magazine is the world’s best-selling classical music magazine and is the most comprehensive monthly guide to the world of classical music – live, broadcast and recorded.

Each issue provides access to the world’s most renowned musicians, features on all aspects of classical music and comprehensive reviews from our world-class team of critics. The print and digital editions of the magazine are also accompanied by a CD or digital format containing a complete work, often an exclusive release from a BBC orchestra or other ensemble, performed by a first-class roster of musicians.

Born in Australia, Charlotte hails from a family of musicians with whom she performed chamber music from a young age. She earned a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from London’s Royal College of Music, followed by a master’s in English from Cambridge University. For the past 15 years she has worked in editorial roles at Gramophone Magazine and The Strad, and as a freelance arts writer. She became The Strad’s Editor in 2017 and since then has worked to develop and integrate the brand’s print and digital platforms. In her spare time, she continues to perform as an active chamber musician.

Charlotte comments: “I’m delighted to be taking on the role of BBC Music Magazine’s Editor at a particularly exciting time, as the brand approaches its 30th birthday. The magazine gave me my first taste of music journalism shortly after leaving university, and this has paved the way for so many wonderful musical encounters over the years. It therefore seems especially appropriate that I return to BBC Music Magazine at this point, ready to build on its prestigious reputation. I understand the loyalty and affection that BBC Music Magazine’s substantial community of readers has for the brand and want nothing more than to continue to provide informative and entertaining content across all platforms as we look to the future.”

Andrew Davies, Managing Director, IM Specialist, added: “I am absolutely delighted to be welcoming Charlotte to lead BBC Music Magazine in the next phase of its exciting evolution. Charlotte brings an enormous amount of knowledge, experience and energy to the role and will be leading a superb, well-established team when she takes up the post in January 2022, right at the beginning of the brand’s 30thanniversary year.”

Charlotte will be in post from 10 January 2022 and reporting to Andrew Davies, Managing Director, IM Specialist.
