Marie Claire launches new digital edition in Nigeria

The Marie Claire Group has entered the African market for the first time with the launch of a new digital edition in Nigeria. The website marieclaire.ng and the social media channels are live with the maiden digital cover featuring music icon Yemi Alade launching on 5 May.

Announcing the arrival of Marie Claire Nigeria, under license with The Guardian, the French media group said the new edition aims to shape the cultural and political landscape for women through its investment in “compelling storytelling, and exclusive fusion of inspirational fashion and beauty, channelling resources, and world-class journalism towards championing women’s empowerment”.

“Marie Claire is a brand dedicated to modern women and reflects their voices,” said Chidera Muoka, Editor-In-Chief of Marie Claire Nigeria. “I have always been aware of the injustice and marginalisation the average Nigerian women face, from discriminatory laws to gender stereotypes.

“Yet, recent socio-political movements in the country show how resilient women are in changing the status quo, by pioneering and championing socio-political movements and the 2023 general elections. I am excited at the opportunity to investigate, contextualise and platform the entire spectrum of stories that affect women today.”

The Executive Director of The Guardian Nigeria, Toke Alex Ibru, added: “Marie Claire aligns with The Guardian Group’s portfolio of brands, including the exclusive women’s titles to the African market. We are confident this partnership will provide Nigerians and Africans with a significant and authentic media platform.”

Jean de Boisdeffre, Executive Director of Marie Claire International, said the group, which reaches over 100 million women in 28 countries worldwide, was thrilled to be active in the African continent.

“The Guardian Group is renowned for its exceptional journalism and award-winning reporting, making them the best partner for a journalist-focused brand like Marie Claire,” he added. “We take immense pride in launching a major international women’s brand in Nigeria, and our mission is to support and empower Nigerian women whilst Marie Claire editions worldwide will showcase Nigeria’s flourishing fashion designers and dynamic creators.”
