Ruud first entered the paper industry in 1984, working in sales and exports at KNP (Royal Dutch Paper Mills). After several positions and changes within KNP, he became responsible for their sales office in Germany following the acquisition of Leykam.

In 2001, he was headhunted by UPM and becomes Sales Director Fine Papers for the German market, eventually becoming Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing Fine Papers in Helsinki. Over the years, his responsibilities grew, including a role as Senior Vice President, Magazine Publishing & Advertising, with full P/L responsibility for a turnover of approximately €4 billion. In his current position, he is responsible for the Global Sales Organisation of UPM Communication Papers.
