Centenary congratulations keep pouring for FIPP

Long standing members, Media Business Association of Taipei (MBAT), based in Taiwan, China, share a recount of what FIPP has meant for them and their market during all these years.

At this momentous milestone, the MBAT extends our heartfelt congratulations to FIPP on its centenary. With deep respect and admiration, we celebrate this historic occasion alongside media professionals worldwide.

Over the past century, FIPP has brought together the collective intelligence and strength of the global publishing and media community, establishing itself as one of the most influential platforms in international media. Its flagship annual event, the FIPP World Media Congress, has long served as a key opportunity for countries around the world to gather insights from the latest global trend reports and successful case studies.

Since 1997, just one year after MBAT’s founding, we have actively participated in FIPP’s annual congresses to broaden our perspectives and learn from global peers. Through FIPP, we have not only benefited from in-depth industry reports and trend analysis, but have also had the honour of representing Taiwan, China on the international stage. Notably, FIPP’s annual Innovation in Media Report has served as a critical guide for Taiwan’s media industry, offering insights into monetising content, membership strategies, AI, and more, empowering informed decision-making and innovation across the sector.

Over the years, several distinguished speakers from Taiwan have been invited to present at the FIPP Congress, showcasing the achievements in digital content and business model innovation. FIPP has also highlighted Taiwanese media’s creative use of AI, further emphasising the industry’s innovation capacity and global competitiveness. These exchanges have not only enhanced the internationalisation of Taiwanese media, but also deepened global recognition and support for Taiwan’s content production capabilities. We are honoured to contribute to this global dialogue and to share in the collective pursuit of knowledge and growth.

Evolving membership and strategic positioning of MBAT

Founded in 1996, MBAT is Taiwan’s sole industry association representing the magazine and media publishing sector. We have been awarded top honours by the Taiwan City Government as an outstanding professional association.

MBAT includes 138 of Taiwan’s most influential magazine publishers, alongside 22 digital media and platform service providers, collectively reaching 9 million loyal readers across Taiwan. The Association is led by a board of 15 directors and supervisors, who work collaboratively to elevate the industry and enhance member services.

In response to the rapidly evolving media landscape, digital transformation, and increasingly diverse market demands, MBAT’s membership has expanded from traditional print publishers to encompass digital content creators and cross-media operators. This reflects broader structural shifts within the industry and has necessitated a widening of our service offerings. In 2021, we officially updated our English name to the Media Business Association of Taipei, to better reflect our broader mandate, now encompassing advocacy, interdisciplinary collaboration across journalism, the arts, multimedia, distribution, events, academia, and public policy. We have also begun issuing white papers to support data-driven industry advancement.

Content value and AI challenges

In recent years, MBAT has been a leading advocate for the “Pay for News” policy, urging both the government and society to recognise the value of content. We are actively lobbying for legislation that mandates fair compensation for the use of news content by major digital platforms. This initiative has already gained cross-party support from Taiwan’s three major political parties, and we are now pushing forward with policy development.

Simultaneously, MBAT is closely monitoring the impact of AI on content production and media structures. Through forums and workshops, we are helping media professionals equip themselves for the challenges and opportunities of this new era. Upholding editorial quality and social responsibility remains essential if we are to create lasting value for media in the age of AI.

Looking ahead, MBAT will continue working hand in hand with FIPP to strengthen Taiwan, China’s role as a bridge in international media dialogue. We are committed to fostering deeper learning and collaboration, while contributing Taiwan’s voice and innovation to the global media community in pursuit of sustainable progress.

Congratulations once again on FIPP’s centenary, here’s to the next hundred years of excellence and leadership!
