Haymarket Media Group’s Campaign appoints Gideon Spanier as head of media

Spanier joins Campaign today (Monday 19 October) in a new role that gives him responsibility for coverage of the vital media sector across all platforms – digital, live and in print. He will also edit www.mediaweek.co.uk, the specialist title that recently celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Claire Beale, Campaign’s Global editor-in-chief, said: “Gideon has a formidable track record as a national media journalist and a deep understanding of the dynamic media sector that is so important to both Campaign and Media Week. I’m really looking forward to working with him to develop our coverage of media both in the UK and overseas, ensuring that we remain the first place media executives come to find out what the latest machinations in the media world really mean.”

Spanier said: “The media and advertising business is increasingly global, so I am excited to join a company that wants to make sense of this fast-changing, digital world by investing in original journalism, live events and international expansion. Campaign has a great history and I’m looking forward to being part of shaping its future.”

Until recently, Spanier was a business reporter at The Times and previously spent more than a decade at the Evening Standard covering media, advertising and technology. Among his recent exclusives was the revelation that Trinity Mirror was in talks to buy the Daily Express.

Spanier continues to write columns for the Standard, and also chairs the Broadcasting Press Guild, a national association of journalists who cover the TV and radio industries.

Spanier’s first major role for Campaign will be to host the prestigious annual Media Week Awards on 22 October in London.
