How did it feel to be a winner and what did it mean?
I felt so incredibly honoured to be a Rising Star winner. To be judged on an international stage and be among three other inspiring young women all smashing it in their individual fields was a great feeling.
How has it helped you in the past year?
Being named a Rising Star definitely gave me a boost in confidence and inspired me to push even harder in 2018. I think it’s rubbed off on my team, too – my new web editor was named AOP Rising Star in 2018.
What advice would you give to other young people in the industry?
Work hard, be nice. The only barrier to your success is you, so just get your head down, crack on and be the best you can be. And be nice, because you never know where your next opportunity might come from.
What areas of the industry excite you going forward?
I feel like as an industry we’re taking this big leap into the (relative) unknown, trying to convert digital anonymous users into paying customers. It’s really exciting because with advances in technology and understanding of how we can better use data, we’ve got this incredible opportunity to get even closer to our readers and can then give them exactly what they want, when they want it!
Laura, speaking at DIS2018.
What’s the best thing about being the editor of Olive magazine?
Combining my two passions – eating and writing!
What’s been the most memorable thing you’ve taken from your job in the past 12 months?
To think bigger. Previously I felt restrained by what I/we were able to achieve right now, at this moment. I’ve learnt to smash through those boundaries and be bolder with my ambitions.
Who do you look up to in the industry?
My publisher Dominic Murray has been a great inspiration and taught me a lot; but, in terms of other editors, I’m a massive fan of Justine Picardie, editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar. Her covers are just consistently stunning and surprising, and she’s really helped to transform this heritage magazine into a forward-thinking, trend-setting brand.
What’s the best bit of your job?
The best thing about my job always has and continues to be the people. Whether that’s meeting the incredibly passionate and talented people whose stories we share or recipes we feature, or my team who I’ve seen grow and develop, and who constantly keep me on my toes and continue to make olive better and better. People make me happy and keep me inspired.
