Politico introduces subscription model in Europe

The announcement comes at a time of continued expansion for Politico in Europe, which in five months has built the largest newsroom covering EU politics and policy in Brussels with an average monthly online audience of more than 1m unique visitors (Omniture 7/2015).

The European edition of Politico is a joint venture between Axel Springer SE and Politico.

Politico Pro in Europe builds on the success of Politico’s US premium subscription product, which launched in 2011. Pro¹s European news service is designed for organisations that have a direct stake in energy, technology and health care politics and policy in the EU.

A Politico Pro subscription includes early morning newsletters; customisable news alerts pushed via email throughout the day; and in-depth online articles with analysis and forward-looking insight. Pros also receive Politico’s weekly Brussels Influence newsletter and priority access to Politico’s news-making events in Europe.

Pro subscription rates are based on the subscriber organisation’s number of users and number of policy areas. A base subscription starts at 5 users for 1 policy area. Ryan Heath’s Brussels Playbook, which is sent to nearly 40,000 readers every weekday at 7:00am, will remain free to readers. Content on politico.eu will also remain accessible to readers at no charge.

Shéhérazade Semsar-de Boisséson, Managing Director of the Politico joint venture: The launch of Politico Pro paid subscriptions is an exciting next step for our expansion in Europe, and one that demonstrates a commitment from Politico and Axel Springer to build a sustainable, scalable and profitable model for high-quality, high-impact journalism in Europe.

Dari Gessner, Executive Director of Politico Pro Services: Our team has seen significant interest for Pro from hundreds of government institutions, professional service firms, multinational corporations, trade associations and NGOs who want someone to cut through the noise of EU policy news, tell them what really matters and tell them first. Ralph Büchi, President Axel Springer International: The launch of Politico Europe’s paid subscription offerings constitutes another major step in the expansion of Axel Springer’s paid journalistic offerings. We see that our readers are willing to pay when they get a profound add on value. Politico also announced stand-alone subscription offerings.

Brussels Influence, a weekly intelligence newsletter on EU lobbying, transparency and governance sent out each Monday, will be available for individual subscription directly online.

Politico weekly European print edition, which has a circulation of 30,000 and is available for free at select locations in Brussels, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, London and Luxembourg, will also remain available for paid subscription for readers who wish to have guaranteed weekly delivery at their homes or offices.
