The bond between fashion and magazines, explained

Fashion and magazines are strongly bound together. Hye Yeon Han is a renowned fashion stylist in Korea working on fashion styling for ads and pictorials on fashion magazines. She works with prominent celebrities all over Asia, along with appearing on TV programmes – giving fashion styling tips. She also lectures at Kaya School of Magazine on how to manage fashion editorials, mainly focusing on fashion styling during the process. Here she tells us why those who want to be in the magazine industry should attend.

Han Hye-Yeon TEACHING ()

As someone who works in the fashion industry and has been working closely with magazines, there are certain ways of dealing with fashion content. However, there was no educational institution that systematically taught content specifically for magazines and fashion in Korea until the Kaya School of Magazine was established. In some cases, editors or other staff did not know how to deal with the variables that happen on site when shooting and they ended up having difficulties resolving the situation. So, it was a great opportunity for her to join Kaya School of Magazine as a lecturer to pass on her knowledge and experience.

Han’s lectures are based on actual cases that she has seen and experienced. This is an opportunity for students to learn and gain real life insights that they would not get unless they worked in the field as an assistant or an intern. Giving specific cases studies where things went wrong unexpectedly at the end of the process and discussing how they fixed the situation, provides a valuable and detailed step-by-step approach for each and every process.

As with all content creation processes, fashion editorials cannot be done solely by one person. It is a matter of cooperation through constant communication and the sharing of ideas and concepts with everyone involved, such as editors, photographers and stylists.

Han’s lectures are two-way, where students are encouraged to actively participate by not only talking and asking questions, but also by listening and learning from another. This allows students to get used to the importance of communication, and for her to get a positive energy from students.

Han says, “I am a type of person who prefers analogue things including a printed magazine. However, it is unavoidable that the trend is changing towards digital. It is necessary to have more content online, meaning that there is much more work that should and must be done. Cooperation among the editorial, digital and marketing departments is more important than ever before. In terms of fashion, it is necessary to broaden our view of what constitutes fashion not only for fashion in magazines, but also for fashion in a wider sense. Instead of thinking fashion as what we wear to adorn ourselves, we need to broaden our perspective to consider fashion as something that can be incorporated into our whole lifestyle”.

The curriculum at Kaya School of Magazine is established to contribute to the advancement in the magazine industry and to educate people who have a passion for magazines. Anyone with an interest in magazine journalism and the magazine industry can apply for the course.
