2016 Digital Innovators West Coast Tour to visit multi-platform digital native Tastemade
Thanks to a US$40-million-dollar investment late last year by Goldman Sachs and existing investors Redpoint Ventures, Raine Ventures, Comcast Ventures, Liberty Media, Scripps Networks Interactive, and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation, Tastemade is poised to be a major cross-platform video player.
Tastemade now reaches over 100 million monthly active viewers across its network, and is seeing over 1 billion views monthly, including views from Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube and other sites. Tastemade’s audience is young and mobile, with 75 percent of its audience in the 18 to 34 year age range and more than 70 percent watching on smartphones.
While the company’s main focus remains digital – with a specific focus on mobile – Tastemade is one of a handful of companies who have completed the digital-to-TV migration by selling one of its shows to Scripps Networks Interactive’s Cooking Channel which is part of the cable television channel lineup. The company also has a distribution deal with AppleTV.
It is expected that some of the money raised will be used to expand Tastemade’s geographic footprint outside the US. Today, for example, Tastemade has more than 315,000 YouTube subscribers, 3.2 million Facebook fans and nearly 200 million views per month across both platforms in Brazil. This year, the company is looking to expand in Japan and other markets it launches dedicated channels in.
The visit to Tastemade is sure to be a highlight for tour participants wanting to get an inside look at a highly innovative company who is building a successful revenue model that spans digital, mobile and television platforms.
The programme for the DI Tour is coming together and the full programme will be released in the coming weeks. Also lined-up for the Los Angeles leg of the Tour are: AwesomenessTV, a network for individuals who build their channels on YouTube and Hello Giggles, a website and media brand co-founded by actress Zooey DesChannel that covers pop culture, love, friendship, news and other topics important to women.
