4 milestones from the digital world in 2014, and all rising in 2015
We Are Social’s new Digital, Social and Mobile in 2015 report shows 2014 was a landmark year for growth across all things digital. And the report suggests this growth shows no signs of slowing anytime soon.
The milestones achieved in 2014 include:
- Worldwide social media users exceeded 2 billion back in August
- Worldwide penetration of mobile phones passed 50% in September
- The number of global internet users passed 3 billion in early November
- The number of active mobile connections surpassed the total world population in December
Globally this is the digital picture:
- Worldwide: 3.010bn internet users; 2.078bn social users; 1.685bn mobile connections
- In Europe: 584m internet users; 387m social users; 1.1bn mobile connections
- In Asia Pacific: 1,407m internet users; 1,065 social users; 879m mobile connections
- In China: 642mm internet users; 629m social users; 506m mobile connections

- The average user spends 2.4 hours on social each day, but that varies around the world
- Mobiles account for almost one-third of global web traffic, and their share is rising fast
