A new moment for magazines

Particularly during the past two pandemic years, we saw renewed interest in the tangibility of print. The indie mag scene is now a thriving arena for those wishing to cut their teeth in the world of media, and alongside other innovative sectors like podcasting, newsletters and visual digital storytelling, we are seeing a new generating of media talent make its way into the mainstream.

“For UPM, it is important that the Rising Stars Awards is being continued because it clearly shows young people appreciate the value of paper,” said Ruud van den Berg, Senior Vice President, Sales, UPM Communication Papers. “We also firmly believe young talent within our industry provides new insights and experiences we can all learn from. This enables the industry to grow and develop in these extraordinary times. By partnering with FIPP, UPM commits to the future of print and its effective coexistence with digital media.”

Awards will be presented in the following two categories:

  • Rising Stars in Journalism: FIPP is looking for the best new journalistic talent in any field. If you can demonstrate that you’ve produced innovative, impactful work, then the association wants to hear from you!
  • Rising Stars in the Business of Media: where the judges will be looking for examples of success from anyone involved in the business of media, including areas such as product development, sales, marketing, distribution, technology and more.

Entrants can either nominate themselves, or somebody in their team they feel has really excelled over the past twelve months. The judging panel will select up to three winners in both categories, who will all receive full FIPP memberships for a year alongside their award.

Former Rising Stars winner, Joanna Abeyie, picking up her award, along with the small matter of her 2020 MBE! Joanna was recently named Interim Head of Diversity for The BBC, and you can read the full story here.
