But this is easier said than done.
At the FIPP World Congress in Toronto, Canada a panel of experts discuss how the game has changed for building brands internationally, and shares what opportunities they see for publisher partnerships today.
John Cabell, CEO of Cueball in the USA, will lead the panel with David Woodley of Time Out (UK), Hans Hamer of Axel Springer (Germany), Julie Hansen of Business Insider (USA) and Mike Lovell of Meredith Corporation (USA) as his guests.

David Woodley, Managing Director International, Time Out, UK
David is Managing Director International at Time Out, leading the global expansion of the Time Out brand. David has extensive experience in global marketing, brand franchising and strategic partnership management.
Before joining Time Out in 2013 David’s earlier career spanned both public and private sectors. After an early career in consulting and investment banking, he progressed through a number of marketing and commercial roles at Vodafone where he was instrumental in expanding their global franchise business to over 50 countries.
He is now for developing and growing Time Out’s branded portfolio worldwide.
Hans Hamer, publishing and managing director, Automotive, sport and computer/consumer electronics, Axel Springer, Germany
Dr. Hans Hamer is publishing and managing director of the Axel Springer publishing group for automotive, sports and computer/consumer electronics in Germany (12 domestic brands, 44 international brands, online and mobile activities).
He is responsible for the three market leading magazine media groups AUTO BILD, COMPUTER BILD and SPORT BILD.
AUTO BILD is the world’s biggest car magazine with publications in 33 countries and over 30 million readers worldwide. The AUTO BILD family includes the special interest magazines AUTO BILD MOTORSPORT, AUTO BILD SPORTSCARS, AUTO BILD ALLRAD (4x4), AUTO BILD KLASSIK – launched in 2007, as well as AUTO BILD REISEMOBIL (mobile homes / caravanning) – launched in 2014.
Since 2010 AUTO BILD is also available as an interactive app for all tablets (iOS and Android) and is by far the most successful automotive app in Germany. Autobild.de was launched in 1996 and is the market leader in Germany, still growing steadily. In 2009, autohaus24.de, the leading online broker of new cars in Germany, was launched as a joint venture between autobild.de and Sixt, Germany’s biggest rental car company.
SPORT BILD was launched in 1988 and is Europe’s biggest sports magazine. Since 2012 the SPORT BILD Plus tablet app complements SPORT BILD as a second digital-only weekly issue on Sunday night.
COMPUTER BILD, AUDIO VIDEO FOTO BILD (consumer electronics) and COMPUTER BILD SPIELE (gaming) are all market leaders in Europe. All three magazines are available as tablet apps. The website computerbild.de was re-launched in 2007 and is now leading the German market.
Prior to joining Axel Springer AG in 2001, Hans worked for nearly 10 years for Gruner + Jahr, Europe’s second-largest publishing company. He started his career at BBDO advertising agency in 1990.

Julie Hansen, President, Business Insider, USA
Julie joined Business Insider in 2008 as its COO and publisher and was named president in 2011. As employee #5 at Business Insider, she has led the organization through seven years of tremendous growth from its pre-revenue stage to a thriving commercial success with 100% audience and 90% revenue growth y-o-y in 2015.
In addition to overseeing the revenue teams, she manages all aspects of the company’s operations outside of editorial, including finance, technology, marketing, legal, HR, and the events (conference) division.
Prior to Business Insider, Hansen was hired by CBS to launch the NCAA.com web site, a major overhaul of the league’s consumer property.
She previously worked at Condé Nast, where she led the team that built and maintained 15 magazine-branded web sites ranging from The New Yorker to Golf Digest. She joined Conde Nast from Time Inc., where she built the #1 web site for golfers, Golf.com.
Hansen’s digital roots predate the commercial web. While at Penguin Books, she created the company’s digital division at age 26, publishing a variety of software-based projects on CD-ROM and other formats and creating the company’s first web site, penguin.com, in 1996.
A frequent speaker on digital advertising topics, Hansen has a BA in English from Yale University and an MBA from Columbia University.

Mike Lovell, director of investor relations, Meredith International, USA
Mike Lovell, 42, is director of Investor Relations and Meredith International at Meredith Corp., the largest media and marketing company serving women in the United States. He’s held the IR role since 2007, and the international role since 2006.
A native of Detroit, Lovell holds a bachelor’s degree from Miami University and duel master’s degrees from Northwestern University (journalism) and the University of Iowa (MBA).
Lovell lives in Des Moines, Iowa, with his wife, Amie, and their children, Reese, Allie, Colette and Kameron.
John Cabell, founder and CEO of Cue Ball, USA
John, who will host the panel, is the founder and CEO of Cue Ball LLC (www.cueballdigital.com), advisors and brokers to the global publishing, media, marketing and entertainment industries.
Cue Ball’s core practice is the brokerage and development of cross border media through licenses, joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and strategic partnerships. The group has worked with 130 clients in 19 countries and brokered more than 400 deals since its inception in 1997.
Clients include large diversified enterprises such as Bloomberg, BBC Worldwide, Meredith, American Express, Bonnier, Gruner + Jahr, Hachette Filipacchi, Playboy, Editora Abril, and Hubert Burda Media … specialist publishers such as Active Interest Media, Citizen K, Time Out Group, Harvard Business Review, Outside, The Economist, Surface, and Future … and pure-play digital media such as BusinessInsider, Allrecipes, and genConnect, as well as recently announced the Daily Beast.

John and his business partner, Mike Greehan, are co-authors of the International Magazine Media Handbook published by FIPP. Prior to founding Cue Ball, John was the publishing director of Women’s Sports at Sports & Fitness Publishing.
From 1991 – 1995, he was the director of international development for Rodale Inc. he began his media career in 1977 as an account executive for MCA-owned New Times Magazine. From then until 1991, he served in various sales, marketing and management positions for Ziff Davis, CBS and Rodale.
He was a nationally ranked distance runner during his school, college and post-college years from 1972 – 1982, and is a 1977 graduate of Princeton University (BA Economics).
