Ian Fairservice came to live in Dubai in January 1978 when he was 21 years old. He founded his company, Motivate Publishing in 1979 with the launch of What’s On, the region’s first English language magazine.
Together with his partner Obaid Humaid Al-Tayer, who is now the UAE Minister of State for Finance, he has seen the company develop into one of the most successful media houses in the region. The company publishes a wide range of media assets, with staff based in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and London.
Fairservice was also one of the founder members of the International Advertising Association (IAA) – UAE Chapter. Here he served on the board for more than 20 years. He has also served on the world board of the International Advertising Association and has been the Middle East representative of the Cannes Advertising Festival since 2000.
In March 2007, he founded the Dubai Lynx Advertising Awards for the Middle East & Africa in partnership with the Cannes Advertising Festival with whom Motivate also stages the annual Dubai International Advertising Festival.
Duncan Edwards is the President and CEO of Hearst Magazines International, an EVP of Hearst Magazines and Vice Chairman of the National Magazine Company (NatMag), Hearst’s publishing business in the UK.
He is also a Director of The Hearst Corporation. Edwards is responsible for Hearst’s magazine activities outside of the USA which includes operations in nearly 60 countries, comprising wholly owned businesses, Joint Ventures and licenses.
Building on its “months to moments” mantra, the company has become digital-, mobile-led, delivering “large scale audiences around well-defined media brands.” The strategy is paying off: In 2011, it had a digital footprint of 74 million unique users worldwide. Today it is 329 million.
At the recent FIPP World Congress in Toronto, Canada, Edwards said, “This is perhaps the most exciting time ever to be in content.” He will further expand on this in Dubai.
Before joining FIPP as president and CEO in October 2009, Chris Llewellyn was international managing director of Bauer Consumer Media (formerly Emap Consumer Media) since 1998.
In addition to FIPP’s own events, Llewellyn regularly speaks and meets with media leaders from around the world, providing him with deep and unique insights into the challenges and opportunities on offer in markets the world over.
In addition to the View from the Top panel, the FIPP ME&A speaker programme will provide insights into latest media trends for the Middle East, Africa and beyond, include digital and multi-platform brand case studies and expert insights, as well as consider a range of opportunities for publishers (local and international) when it comes to the Middle East and Africa.
With delegates from a dozen countries already confirmed, FIPP Middle East & Africa is shaping up as the media publishers event for the region in 2016. Delegates who have so far registered are from markets such as the UAE, Iran, South Africa and Kenya and Germany, the UK and USA, to name a few.
