Axel Springer to give Award 2017 to world wide web inventor Sir Timothy Berners-Lee
The Axel Springer Award will be bestowed on May 2, 2017 at an evening ceremony at the Axel Springer Journalists Club. “An evening for Sir Timothy Berners-Lee” will reflect on the multi-faceted influence of Berners-Lees’ invention.
Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, said “His challenge was to overcome borders and bring people together. Sir Timothy Berners-Lee found a solution and at the same time laid the foundation for nothing less than a radical transformation of our world.”
Sir Timothy Berners-Lee (pictured) was born on June 8, 1955 in London. Almost 30 years ago he drew up his plans for a global hypertext information sharing system while at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, CERN. He invented the world wide web and the language on which it is based – HTML (HyperText Markup Language). The world wide web was conceived as an open platform through which people could exchange information, regardless of geographic or cultural borders. Today Berners-Lee continues to campaign for an open web. He is director of the World Wide Web Consortium, the World Wide Web Foundation as well as a Professor at both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Oxford University.
The Award is given to outstanding personalities who demonstrate an exceptional talent for innovation, create and transform markets, shape culture, and also face their social responsibility. The Award recognises the recipients’ achievements so far and encourages them to develop these further. The inaugural recipient of the Axel Springer Award was Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, on February 25, 2016. The format of the award ceremony is tailored individually to the award winner.
The Axel Springer Award is a non-monetary prize.
